Subsystem: Carotenoids

This subsystem's description is:

Carotenoids, derivatives of retinol, are widely present in nature, in bacteria, archaea and plants. The first several steps of carotenoid biosynthesis are conserved. However there are differences in structure due to the length, saturation and oxidation state of carotenoids as well as in their cellular function. In this SS we combined different pathways of carotenoid biosynthesis. Some of them are well known (as one in cyanobacteria), but the others are not completely understood (as carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in Staphylococci)
