This pathway is widely distributed among eubacteria and archaea. Genes of the ADI pathway were first characterized in Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the arcDABC operon, encoding an arginine/ornithine antiporter, arginine deiminase, catabolic ornithine carbamoyltransferase, and carbamate kinase, respectively. The major physiological function of this pathway appears to supply ATP under anaerobic conditions. The arc operons from a variety of organisms have also been reported: Lactobacillus sake , B. licheniformis, Clostridium perfringens, Rhizobium etli , Halobacterium salinarium, Oenococcus oeni, and Enterococcus faecalis, and the gene order is quite conserved in different species with some variations. In E. faecalis, the ADI pathway is induced by arginine irrespective of the state of aeration, which is likely the result of a unique regulatory circuit with three different transcriptional regulators encoded in the same locus as the arc genes.
